San Mateo is one of the municipalities in Gran Canaria with no sea outlet, located halfway in the east centre of the island. The ravines Castillejos and Mireles run throughout and are joined in La Mina ravine. The Pico de las Nieves, 1.949 m high, makes it the highest in the island. In flora, the pine forests which appear at an altitude of 1.000 metres and which are often covered by a dense coat of clouds. The name of San Mateo comes from an ancient church.
