Spain is a transcontinental country located in southwestern Europe and North Africa occupying most of the Iberian Peninsula and includes two archipelagos : the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean and the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean off northwest Africa . Spain also have five places of sovereignty on and off the coast of North Africa : Ceuta , Melilla , Islas Chafarinas , Peñon de Alhucemas , and Peñon de Velez de la Gomera . The Spanish mainland is bordered to the south and east by the Mediterranean Sea , to the north by France and to the west by the Atlantic Ocean and Portugal .

Letizia has become very famous around the world and has been in the covers of lots of magazines and yellow press because she is quite fond of fashion and takes care of her image very much . The king and queen have two daughters : Leonor , who will be the future queen of Spain and Sofía .

Basic education is compulsory and free for all people , it comprises ten years of schooling and takes place regularly between six and sixteen years of age .
