It is located 18 km south of the city of Santa Ana in the municipality of El Congo. It has an altitude of 745 msnm and an area of 25.3 km ². In addition, its depth is 115 m. It has an island called the Isla del Cerro or Teopán. The place name "coatepeque" means "Cerro de Culebras" in Nahuatl.
