ABSTRACT · A didactic proposal of competency based learning the General Chemistry
course of the first year of the cycle basic engineering of the UTN-FRM is presented. The
design is based on presenting to the students contextualized situations at the beginning
of the learning period, increasing its complexity as they progress. The students carry out
research working in groups. Such resolutions imply working in an integrated manner in the
classroom and in the chemistry laboratory, always guided by the teachers. A transversal
theme, common to engineering, is the use of resources such as gas for heating purposes,
water and the safety and pollution issues associated with them. This type of didactic propo-
sal allows students to relate concepts of chemistry with situations of daily life, acquire skills
related to research, critical thinking, decision making and information management, among
others. Through the analysis of situations in context, greater motivation of the students and
a proactive attitude towards their learning have been observed. The experiences carried
out in the chemistry laboratory also make it possible to familiarize oneself with safety pro-
cedures, and the investigations are oriented to internalize environmental problems and the
