The engineering design process takes time. If you are reading this, that means that you know English and that you are interested in this topic, you want to be an engineer or you just want to make a robot. But first, we have to ask ourselves a question.

--What is the engineering design process ?

Well, it is the process of making robots. This is the process that almost all engineers take. All those builders on youtube, engineers at Nasa, Apple, and many more companies use it.

--But what are the steps for the engineering design process ?

Those steps are: Brainstorm-Research-Prototype-Final Build. To make these easier to remember, we are going to change the names. Brainstorm will be Big, Research will be Robots, Prototype will be Pop and finally, Final build will be Footballs. So we turned Brainstorm-Research-Prototype-Final Build into Big-Robots-Pop-Footballs. This remembering technique was thought up by the one and only Mark Rober, a youtube engineer that worked at Nasa for nine years on the curiosity rover.

--What is brainstorming?

Brainstorming is the process of coming up with an idea. To make this step easier for us, we break this down into four steps. First we come up with scenes. For example, the topic of the build is, school. There, some scenes could be, on the school bus, math class, changing clothes for gym class, getting your books from your locker, eating lunch, changing classes or doing your homework. Then we think of problems in those scenes. For example some problems on the bus could be, bullies make fun of you, there are no more seats left and the back seats are already taken. Once you think of problems for all scenes you have to think of solutions for those problems. For example, if we take the problem that there are no more seats on the bus, we need to come up with solutions, we could make something that makes a seat. Or something that makes a pole for you to hold on to. Once you come up with solutions for all problems you have to choose an idea. I’m going to choose the pole that extends. And there I have done the Brainstorm or Big step.

--What do we do in the research step?

In the research step, we do three things. The first is to think of things that your robot has to do. Let’s do that with my robot. Well, my robot has to make a pole from where I can hold on to. It has to hold on to the top and bottom of the bus. You can also just think of things that would be cool on your build. For example: when it is closed it is really compact. Once you have done that step, you have to organize them into two groups. Those are essential and nonessential requirements. Once you have organized them, you have to figure out how you are going to do that. For example I can do the pole thing with gravity and some sukers. What do those mean? Using gravity means that we can use the telescope technique. And for sukers, we can use these electronic suction cups that you can buy online. So we can do something where you put the suction cut on the roof of the bus, then you let the pole fall down and make the other suction cup stick to the ground.

--What do we do in the prototype step?

Once you get to the prototype phase, you have to get your materials and start building. Always remember, quick and dirty for this prototype step. No one is going to see those builds, so you don’t have to make them look good. You just have to make them functional. You may have to go through various attempts because the last one didn't work. Remember that you can always change your idea on how you are building. Once you have a working prototype, go back to your list of essentials requirements, go through that list to see if you have accomplished everything on that essential list. Once you have accomplished everything on the list you can move onto the Final build.

--What do we do in the Final build step?

For this step, you have to tidy up your build. You can rebuild, while making it better. You can totally skrap your prototype and make the Final Build totally different. You can just take your prototype and make it more visually entertaining. It is your decision.

Now you know how to make robots. You do it with a simple process. Big-Robots-Pop-Footballs or Brainstorm-Research-Prototype-Final Build. Hope you have found my article useful and entertaining. See you next time with a new article.
