Art in Egypt has been studied by historians and Egyptologists for years. It is still a topic that fascinates people across the world. Some art found in Egypt dates back to five thousand B.C. Other types of art in Egypt such as pottery, and paintings date back to three thousand B.C.(Egypt culture, 2013) This is very interesting to me because it is hard to imagine people so long ago creating art without the technology we have today. Artists in ancient Egypt were highly respected members of society, the reason for this is because when important members of the ancient Egyptian society passed they were buried with paintings of their family members, gods, and slaves to help them in their afterlife.
Symbolism is a big part of Egyptian art, symbols help express what cannot be expressed otherwise.(Redford. Donald. B. Oxford University press, 2002) Themes are another important part of ancient Egyptian art. Themes can be religious, and mythological, and very often are about the afterlife. Gods, Goddesses, animals, and members of the royal family were a big part of themes in ancient Egyptian art. Artist created larger than life paintings on the tombs of highly respected members of ancient Egyptian society. Scenes from mythology and large depictions of the pharaoh are commonly seen on walls of tombs, pyramids, obelisks, and temples.
Ancient Egyptian Art
By Sam Bruckner
In ancient Egypt they did not have the resources we have today and had to be creative about what to write and paint on. They did not only paint on walls and rock surfaces but were creative and discovered papyrus to write and paint on. Egyptologists have discovered papyrus picture books, and papyrus sheets with elaborate art work on them. Earthenware and pots have been found in temples, tombs, and pyramids show the amazing skill ancient Egyptian artist have in creativity, and how amazing artists they were.(Egypt Culture, 2013)
While the churches in Egypt are being attacked, some of the ancient art is being looted out of the churches, the rest of it is being burned in the attacks. There have been countless amounts of painting burned in the attacks, I find this sad that the beautiful art in Egypt is being destroyed in seconds by angry islamists attacking the churches. The art in Egypt is priceless and attack by attack is being taken out of the churches and either being sold or destroyed.
