DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI
T
he Eastern Florida State College Foundation has named Brevard County Sheriff Wayne
Ivey and government policy expert Bruce Haupt its 2020 Distinguished Alumni.
The Foundation, which provides scholarships to EFSC students, cited their
accomplishments and public service as the reasons both were chosen for the honor.
“Sheriff Ivey and Bruce Haupt exemplify what many EFSC graduates are doing in using
their education to have outstanding careers and help the community. We’re proud to
present them this award,” said Foundation Director Jennie Kriete.
Ivey has been in law enforcement for nearly four decades and is serving his second
term as sheriff. He previously served nearly 20 years with the Florida Division of Law
Enforcement.
During his career, he has developed numerous programs recognized at the national and
state level for innovation and excellence in crime prevention and investigations.
Ivey has also testified before Congress on immigration, opioids and identity theft. He
earned his Associate in Science Degree in Criminal Justice Technology from EFSC.

aupt is a high school drop-out who earned his GED and came to EFSC, then Brevard Community

College, where he credits faculty and staff for giving him the support to earn his Associate in Arts
Degree.
He went on to the University of Florida and Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government for his
Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, respectively, before embarking on a career with the city of Houston
as Deputy Assistant Finance Director.
He has lived in China and worked in Oman as Senior Policy Advisor for the Secretariat General of the
Supreme Council for Planning. Haupt is currently studying for his PhD at the University of Kentucky.
The Distinguished Alumni award is an annual award given to an alumnus of EFSC. The criteria for
nominations are available by contacting the Foundation. Each application is given serious consideration
by the Foundation’s Alumni Committee.
EFSC Hosts December
Melbourne Regional Chamber Meeting

FSC hosted the December Good Morning Space Coast meeting of the Melbourne Regional Chamber. Jennie Kriete reminded members about
the EFSC Foundation BBQ, and Todd Pokrywa, Chamber Chair and President of The Viera Company, shared a video with the group, challenging
all companies to join in the fun and try to win the golden pig at the 4th Annual Backyard BBQ.
Chamber members were treated to a short pep rally from the EFSC cheerleaders and Mr. Titan. Keith Winston from the Brevard Zoo was the
guest speaker and gave an update on the zoo and new projects.
