ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
Hal and Sue Rose
al Rose came to BCC in 1972 on what he believes was a $125
H
tennis scholarship, and it helped pay for his classes. Although he
does not recall how well the tennis team did at that time, he does
remember having a good time at the College. In fact, he still has many
friends from those days.
It was important to Rose that school be affordable and close to
home, allowing him to commute there in his Volkswagen Bug. Rose
appreciated that EFSC (then BCC) felt local to him. He remembers the
kindness and support of his professors as he tried to figure out what
he wanted to do in the future.
Rose eventually became an educator, working at various middle
schools around Brevard. He has taught many courses on career
planning and believes that is part of what makes EFSC such an asset
to the community. Not everyone needs a four-year degree – and EFSC
has something for almost everyone, helping students to get great
jobs with minimal debt.
Hal Rose is the mayor of West Melbourne and
a retired educator. His wife Sue is a retired
radiation technician.
Hal’s wife Sue initially attended an out-of-state college, finding that it
just wasn’t a great fit. She returned home, and with guidance from
her family, enrolled at BCC in 1976. She has never looked back. She
graduated from a pilot program that allowed her to become a radiation technician – a career she held for more than 40 years. Sue
enjoyed the flexibility of her job and loved that she could make good money doing something she liked.
Many members of the Rose family have since become students at EFSC, and they are all astonished by the College’s growth. Hal and
Sue Rose recently came for a tour, revisiting the buildings in which they took classes. Sue was overwhelmed by the incredible Health
Sciences facilities and equipment. As they left at the end of the tour, Hal commented, “I can’t wait to do my council report and let
them know the asset that is in our backyard!”
