WOMEN ’ S SOCCER TEAM NATIONAL CHAMPS
The EFSC Women ’ s Soccer team made history in November , winning the program ’ s first NJCAA Division I National Championship .
• The Titans defeated Tyler Junior College 1-0 in the championship game to capture the first national title in 31 years for Eastern Florida State College .
• The program had been on the doorstep for the past 10 seasons , making the national tournament every season but lost in the national tournament semifinals the past four years .
• The win came as former women ’ s soccer coach and Associate Vice President of Athletics Jeff Carr was inducted into the NJCAA Hall of Fame .
• Carr started the program in 2010 and accumulated 150 wins over his 11 seasons as head coach , stepping down last year .
• “ Ten years ago , Jeff and Dr . Jim Richey started this program and many thought a national championship was not possible ,” said EFSC Vice President of External Affairs Jack Parker . “ We will have a lot of success in the future but it will always come back to this win and what you have accomplished here .”
• Laura Cetina , who was named the Offensive Most Valuable Player in the Tournament , played a key role for the Titans . Cetina scored in two of the final three games and set up the championship-winning goal .
• Holding midfielder Kirsty Woodacre was named the Defensive Most Valuable Player .
• The national title was the first for an EFSC program since the men ’ s golf team won in 1991 and is the eighth national title in EFSC history .
MEN ’ S TENNIS DOUBLES NATIONAL CROWN
EFSC ’ s men ’ s tennis players Bernardo Vieira and Tomas Reche teamed up to win a national title at No . 3 doubles at the NJCAA Division I National Tournament .
• It was the first tennis national title in EFSC history .
• “ It ’ s a great feeling and really good that all of the hard work we put in paid off ,” Reche said . “ We kept our focus the entire match , every point and just played well . We have been improving week by week and this week we just felt great on the court together ,” Reche said .
• The Titans finished fourth overall in the national tournament , the best finish in program history .
