Student Union Groundbreaking
Broke ground on a new Student Union on the Melbourne
campus that will be the vibrant center of student life,
and the next step in the campus’s expansion plan.
(Student Enrollment, Diversity Initiatives, Employee
Relations, Financial Management, Trustee Relations,
Community Awareness)
Student Union Highlights:
• The two-story glass structure will serve as the
front door to the campus and include space for
a variety of student services, government, clubs
and activities.
• There will be a multi-purpose room to hold large
student, college and community events, and a
rooftop terrace.
• There will also be landscaped plazas on both
sides, tying the Student Union together with the
Titan Field House and Science buildings next door.
• The project, which is scheduled for completion in
fall 2018, contains other major elements as well.
They include:
• Titan Boulevard will be transformed into a grassy
promenade with trees, benches and landscaped
pathways.
• 300 more parking spaces will be added to the
college’s main parking lot along with new lighting.
• Three nearby buildings – the Dr. Joe Lee Smith
Teaching Center, Titan Field House and Science
Building – will be repainted.
• The colors will match those of the Student Union
and other new buildings, creating a harmonious
campus-wide look that will later include repainting
all other campus buildings.
• An old classroom wing of the King Center for the
Performing Arts will be torn down to create more
open space that will further enhance the area
around the Student Union.
• All the work is part of the Melbourne campus
expansion that was announced in 2014, and is
making excellent progress.
