Notable Student Achievement
EFSC students showed an exceptionally high level
of achievement in 2017, reaching the national and
international stage and displaying the benefits of
an Eastern Florida education. (Student Enrollment,
Diversity Initiatives, Community Awareness)
Student Highlights:
• Jonathan Howell was selected as a national 2017
Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team
Silver Scholar. The team recognizes 50 two-year
college students from across the nation who
demonstrate academic excellence combined with
leadership and community service.
• Three students were named National Siemens
Scholars through the Aspen Institute and awarded
STEM scholarships – two studying Aerospace
Technology, and another studying Nursing. They
were Jon McMillen, Ryan Vondenhuevel and
Reuben Johnson.
• Michael Ellison was one of 75 Americans selected
to the Congress Bundestag Youth Exchange for
Young Professionals. The prestigious fellowship
sent Ellison to Germany for one year of study.
• Robert Comber and Brice Haraway served as
EFSC’s first delegation to the National Model
United Nations annual conference in New York.
• Gregory Savage was selected from among 143
international nominees to be a 2017 Distinguished
Chapter Member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor
Society.
• Former student Price Tipping was the college’s
first Bachelor’s Degree graduate to be accepted
into medical school, attending the University of
South Florida.
• Seven Eastern Florida State College athletes were
named to the NJCAA All-Academic First Team, all
with perfect 4.0 GPAs.
• They were tennis players Giulianna Hull and
Valeria Arevalo, basketball players Caitlyn Smith
and Noah Horchler, women’s soccer player Juna
Suppan, volleyball player Megan Graefe and
women’s golfer Vittoria Giles.

Hurricane Irma Response
Safely and successfully closed and reopened EFSC for
Hurricane Irma with no major issues with the college’s
Emergency Management Team performing in superb
fashion. (Student Relations, Employee Relations,
Trustee Relations, Community Awareness)
Hurricane Highlights:
•
Irma was a successful test of the college’s
newly rewritten Emergency Response Plan that
strengthened response procedures across-the-
board.
• Facilities, IT and Security teams worked around-
the-clock Sept. 10-17, to inspect all buildings, fix
problems and restore power and key systems so
classes could resume Sept. 18.
• Communication team provided students, faculty
and staff with updated information before, during
and after the storm.
• The college’s Emergency Response Plan
worked as designed with close interaction and
communication between teams.
• Personally toured all four campuses after the
hurricane to speak with students, faculty and staff
and ensure their needs were met.
• Waived out-of-state tuition rates for students
from Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands who
left their hurricane-ravaged homes and moved to
Florida after Hurricanes Irma and Maria.
