Minority Outreach Highlights:
• The college has an aggressive minority outreach effort
underway on many levels. Here are some examples:
• The college hosted about 30 Hispanic community
leaders on the Melbourne Campus to discuss Hispanic
needs in education and provided information for
them to share with their organizations.
• The college’s Office of Student Recruitment
supported the Annual Hispanic Business Expo
Career and Health Fair to talk about educational
opportunities at the college.
• The college sponsored the Crisis in Black Education
seminar explaining college programs, financial aid
and other matters with African-American clergy,
community leaders and educators.
• The college is involved on multiple levels with
a national initiative to increase retention and
graduation rates for minority students.
• For instance, our Center for Teaching Excellence
promoted faculty webinars and discussions on
the educational challenges facing men of color.
• Held a series of student focus groups to discuss
diversity and barriers to success faced by minority
students.
• Students from the Cocoa and Palm Bay campuses
attended the Black, Brown and College Bound
Conference for male black and Hispanic students aimed
at increasing their retention and graduation rates.
• Started a Case Management system to identify
students in academic trouble and connect them
with tutors, Learning Labs and Writing Centers
where 40 percent of the students participating
were minorities.
• Formed a Retention and Equity Task Force to
examine our practices and look for ways to
improve minority student success.
• The college’s advertising and marketing campaigns
for student recruitment prominently feature
minority students in ads for TV, websites, social
media and print.
Summit of Seven Conference
Hosted the Summit of Seven Boys and Men Conference,
with more than 1,000 people attending the event that
provides mentors and role models for youth. (Student
Enrollment, Diversity Initiatives, Public Relations,
Community Awareness)
Summit Highlights:
• The summit is the largest gathering of its kind in
Brevard County and one of the largest in Central
Florida, providing attendees an up-close look at
EFSC and its programs.
• Held on the Melbourne Campus, sessions included
motivational speakers and workshops on subjects
such as education, law enforcement, personal
ethics and teamwork.
• Campus tours were also provided, featuring the
Public Safety Institute, Health Sciences Institute
and Athletic Complex.
• Dozens of corporate and community groups were
involved, allowing the college to showcase its
mission to important Space Coast stakeholders.
