What is good about the paleo diet is that it encourages more vegetables and cuts down on sugar and sodium. Following this diet will significantly reduce intake of many less healthy processed foods. Obviously no alcohol for the adults and if you are happy to forgo many of the wonderful foods the modern world has made possible, you can achieve healthy eating and weight control; but there is no evidence that this will be long term. Claims are: “Eating highfat food is not linked to heart disease or high cholesterol”, “Fats: the ones you were told are healthy are unhealthy”, “Fruit is a problem because it is high in carbohydrates and high in fructose. It’s a killer in sugar” and “This diet will result in better weight loss, blood lipid and glucose levels”. Foods allowed: Eggs, free range Fish Meat (not processed, preferably organically raised animals) Full-cream dairy produce (preferably organic) Vegetables (green, leafy and low in carbohydrates) Nuts (macadamia, walnuts, almonds, not peanuts and cashew) Only fruit with lower carbohydrate contents (apples and berries) Unsweetened tea, coffee and water Olive oil, coconut oil Butter 30 • • February/March 2014
