My Progress
When I first started my journey towards becoming a Family & Consumer
Sciences teacher, I had no idea what to expect. I chose this major because
everything it entails. I was taught to sew at a very young age and the cooking
aspect just came naturally, so I already knew the basics of those two parts of the
major. I didn’t know what else the major consisted of but I was eager to find out. I
took the classes I was supposed to and my knowledge grew. In one of my classes,
we went to the local Jr. High and observed/taught in the FACS classroom so we
were able to gain a little bit of experience in teaching. I didn’t know what I was
doing because I had never done it before, but I effectively taught those students
knife skills. I still had a lot to learn about teaching though. I continued to take
classes that would help me become a better teacher.
I had the opportunity to go back to the Jr. High and teach the Frontiers
class. I was able to teach the students a couple of times and get to see their
personalities. That is where this case study came in. I got to try and put what I
know into play, and get to know the students more to help them learn the best
they can.
After the Jr. High, I went to another Jr. High to do a program called
Journeys. It’s basically a day camp where children from the community came and
participated. The students that are in the teacher education program taught these
children whatever they wanted to teach them. It was a different experience than
at the beginning of the semester because it was a whole new environment.
I still have a lot of things to learn about being a teacher. I want to be able to
get to know my students more than I am capable of doing now. I know by doing
that, it will help me make my lesson plans geared more towards the way the
students learn so school won’t just be something they have to do. I strongly
believe there is always something that can be learned. I want to be one to help
people learn.
