The artist : Marcel Pierre

Marcel Pierre was born in 1897 in Bréel, an old town not far from la Ferté-Macé. He was a French sculptor and a painter. He took part in the First World War in 1916, but he was hurt in 1918. He came back in Normandy in 1919, and his work was influenced by the war. After that, he stayed in La Ferté-Macé, where he died in 1969. He created 13 patriotic monuments in different places, all located in the area.

Peace memorial

Marcel Pierre created a sculpture that is exhibited in the park ‘Barré Saint ‘, which is located in the city centre. This sculpture is a peace monument . It shows injured soldiers looking at an other soldier who is using a bugle (sort of trumpet) . Behind them there is the Christ. It’s a tribute to the people who died fighting in the first world war. Peace is written in latin (‘Pax’).
