his project will improve safety and efficiency by separa ng opposing traffic
with a new interchange at the exis ng intersec on of SR 10 Loop and Peter
Street/Olympic Drive in Clarke County. This intersec on is the only at‐grade
intersec on on SR 10 Loop. The project will provide a con nuous controlled
access facility around the City of Athens.
The $23 million project began late summer of 2012 and should conclude by May 2015,
according to the DOT. The overpass has been constructed and work is progressing on the
exit ramps from the outer loop.
Few ci es of Athens’ size have a true perimeter highway, and while the Athens loop isn’t
technically a perimeter route, it’s nonetheless a selling point for the community for
poten al industries. Making the Olympic Drive intersec on easier to navigate is a
progressive and forward‐thinking move.
Any me we can give those industries be er access to the loop and to downtown, that’s
a great opportunity for them and really to all commuters in Athens.
