A’ KIERA GRANT: A’ KIERA GRANT:
A STUDENT ADVOCATING FOR ALL STUDENTS
BY AYANNA TILGHMAN
A’ Kiera Grant, alongside her running mate Erika Igarashi- Cummings, has stepped into office as the SGA President and Vice President for the 2025 – 2026 academic year.
Running on the platform“ Your Voice. Your Power. Your Campus.” the pair built a strong campaign rooted in purpose, advocacy, and progress for the student body. While they initially struggled to step outside of traditional campaign strategies, they ultimately delivered a message that emphasized togetherness— bringing together students across all platforms through their political themed campaign that aims to showcase unity.
Although Grant has not been in office long, she has already taken strides to ensure every student feels heard and has access to the resources they need. She recently launched SGA’ s Word on the Street, the organization’ s official communications team, dedicated to keeping students informed about every SGA event and campus update.
“ I ' m big on being a student first and then a leader second,” Grant explained. Her approach has been to connect with peers as a fellow student first, then bring their concerns back to the table to transform them into action.

The SGA board is also working to make leadership more accessible. Soon, SGA office hours will be listed in 25Live so students know when they can drop in to share concerns— or simply say hello. Grant maintains an open-door policy, encouraging students to stop by to learn what’ s happening on campus or to get to know her personally.
Grant is especially committed to amplifying student voices. One of her priorities this year is boosting attendance at monthly town hall meetings. For those who may not feel comfortable speaking in public, she plans to implement an anonymous drop box for students to voice their concerns.
“ It never hurts to ask,” she said, emphasizing her belief that students should feel empowered to speak up for what they want.
Every day, Grant works toward building a legacy at NSU that is rooted in service.
“ That’ s really what legacy means to me— just building something long-lasting that has a positive impact on others.”
She wants her peers to have the same opportunities she has had, particularly students who may not always be seen but who aspire to leadership roles. By opening doors for others and creating opportunities across the board, Grant is striving to leave a mark defined by impact and selflessness.

In her own words:“ To me, legacy means to be selfless, but also have an impact.”
