lum is transferable to human medicine.
The skills these students use, from draw-
ing blood to conducting physical exams,
are the same skills they would use on
human patients.
“I consider the RN and MD as spe-
cialists because they work with humans
— that’s one species,” said Belaski, who
has worked in small animal practices in
addition to working with wildlife, exotic
animals and marine mammals. “I tell
them we just work with the rest.”
The curriculum has also drawn upon
the science and research of animals, hab-
itats and life sciences. In 2016, it became
mandatory for veterinarians to be part
of honeybee health checks. It was the
first time veterinarians have had to be
involved in an insect’s life and it’s given
students an opportunity to understand a
new facet of the program.
Belaski believes CTE programs like
the Veterinary Science program and
more than 20 other programs offered by
Silicon Valley CTE are well designed
and offer a service to students to be
college and career ready.
“The CTE instructors come with
years of experience in the industry so
they know what is happening in their
field now and what is ahead,” she said.
“They can prepare students in a way that
gives context to the work and experi-
ence.”
Veterinary science students at Silicon Valley Career Technical Education practice a check-up on a mock patient
cat. Students in the program learn many skills that are transferable to human medicine, such as drawing blood
and conducting physical exams.
”I consider the RN and MD as specialists
because they work with humans — that’s one
species. I tell them we just work with the rest.”
