September 18, 2017 Transitions Longtime ACSA leader Joel Ruiz Herrera announced his retirement effective Aug. 14, following his June 12 resignation as superintendent of Orchard School District. Herrera is a former state ACSA Board director and was a candidate for state vice president in 2010. He served in five school districts in Santa Clara County and in many ACSA roles at the charter, region and state levels. Herrera’s mother and father attended school only to ninth and fifth grade, respec- tively, but emphasized education as a key to success. He was the first in his family to earn the title of “doctor.” During his 27-year career, Herrera had the opportunity to open a brand new high school in 2002, Evergreen Valley High, which had a 1:1 student lap- top program and was wireless throughout. Herrera is a proud Vietnam-era Air Force veteran and looks forward to continuing to serve education in a capacity compatible with the retirement he is enjoying. n n n Indian Springs SD has announced that Clark Redfield has been named superin- tendent/principal. Redfield comes to Indian Springs from a recent interim superinten- dent/principal assignment in Happy Valley ESD. n n n Claremont USD announced that Julie Olesniewicz has been named assistant superintendent, Educational Services, while June Hilton was appointed director, Educational Services. In addition, Natalie Taylor was promoted from elementary prin- cipal to director, Intervention and English Learner Programs. Brenda Hamlett has been named principal of Sumner Danbury Elementary, and Ryan Ward was hired as assistant principal of Sumner Danbury Elementary School. And, finally, Stacy Cordova Diaz was hired as a program spe- cialist in Special Education. principal, La Mirada High School; Terry Pace, principal, La Pluma Elementary; and Majid Salehi, principal, Los Alisos Middle School. Fuentes succeeds Will Ector, Jr. who has retired after six years of service as the district’s superintendent. Francisco Ramirez becomes principal of John Glenn High School, where he’ll be joined by new APs Shanon Cruz and Leonard Shryock. Benjamin Webster was named principal of Benton Middle School, along with new AP Robyn Ridgeway. In the Special Education Department, Paulette Koss was named assistant director. Kimberly Pak was appointed senior behavior intervention specialist, and Jenny Sosa was named a specialist. The dis- trict also named Cynthia Allen as assis- tant director, Head Start; Anna Apoian, director, Nutrition Services; and Michael Gotto, director, Human Resources.
