Longtime ACSA leader Joel Ruiz
Herrera announced his retirement effective
Aug. 14, following his June 12 resignation as
superintendent of Orchard School District.
Herrera is a former state ACSA Board
director and was a candidate for state vice
president in 2010. He served in five school
districts in Santa Clara County and in many
ACSA roles at the charter, region and state
levels. Herrera’s mother and father attended
school only to ninth and fifth grade, respec-
tively, but emphasized education as a key
to success. He was the first in his family to
earn the title of “doctor.” During his 27-year
career, Herrera had the opportunity to open
a brand new high school in 2002, Evergreen
Valley High, which had a 1:1 student lap-
top program and was wireless throughout.
Herrera is a proud Vietnam-era Air Force
veteran and looks forward to continuing
to serve education in a capacity compatible
with the retirement he is enjoying.
