of Education regarding California’s Every
Student Succeeds Act state plan.
Kirst, a professor emeritus with Stanford
University, served two terms as president
of the State Board of Education. His first
term was 1975-82, and then again in 2011
to this year. Before joining the Stanford
faculty, Kirst served in a number of roles
with the federal government, including a
position as Director of Program Planning

Academies are designed and delivered
by ACSA members for ACSA members.
Participants meet academy directors who
are expert practitioners in their fields who
know first-hand the issues and challenges,
along with the intangible rewards, that are
part of leadership in the service of improv-
ing outcomes and potential for students. A
faculty of academy presenters bring their
expertise, passion and experience to pay it
forward to academy participants as the next
generation of leaders.
Academy learners receive invaluable
materials and resources curated by academy
presenters and directors. And, their profes-
sional network will expand immeasurably
through active participation and contribu-
tion to the academy experience.
All academies will be supported by the

ACSA Legislative Advocate Martha
Alvarez covers the State Board for the asso-
ciation and noted that Kirst will be difficult
to replace.
“During his tenure, Mike Kirst has
brilliantly and carefully balanced his per-
spective on the board as a researcher and
academic, while weighing the policy impli-
cations and realities of the challenges faced
by practitioners in the field,” she said.
The next California governor will
appoint a new SBE president and fill any
vacant positions on the board.
