Diller Teen Tikkun Olam awards honor student humanitarians ; nominations sought for 2018

Nominations are being sought for the 2018 Diller Teen Tikkun Olam Awards , a national program that recognizes up to 15 Jewish teens annually with $ 36,000 each for exceptional leadership and impact in volunteer projects that aim to make the world a better place .
Last year ’ s awardees included five from California :
• Benjamin Hoffner-Brodsky , 17 , Davis , launched a program that helps high school students become community leaders through internships at the local winter shelter .
• Nathaniel Goodman , 18 , San Diego , developed a filmmaking initiative that assists non-profits in sharing their messages .
• Elias Rosenthal , 17 , Santa , Rosa , organized twin projects that encourage health and fitness literacy , as well as financial literacy and leadership for teens .
• Asa Schaeffer , 17 , Santa Cruz , formed a Challenger Baseball league that gives children with physical or developmental disabilities the chance to benefit from team sports .
• Shira Strongin , 18 , Corona del Mar , curated an anonymous blog that has expanded into an international support group for young women with rare illnesses and disabilities .
Since 2007 , the Helen Diller Family Foundation has awarded more than $ 3 million to 99 teenage leaders who are making a difference in their communities . The award may be used to support the recipient ’ s project or education . Up to five teens from California and 10 from across the United States will be recognized for their humanitarian efforts .
Teachers , civic leaders , rabbis or anyone else interested in nominating a teen – or any teen interested in applying – can visit www . dillerteenawards . org to begin the nomination / application process .
The deadline for nominations is Dec . 18 , and the deadline for applications is Jan . 8 . Self-identified Jewish teens who are 13 to 19 years old on Jan . 8 are eligible . Teens who have applied in the past are also eligible to reapply .
“ Nominating a teen for the Tikkun Olam Awards is a wonderful opportunity for educators , civic leaders and teen mentors across the country to recognize young Jewish leaders who are creating meaningful change at home and across the globe ,” said Jackie Safier , president of the Helen Diller Family Foundation . “ We hope the Awards encourage and catalyze a generation of
Jewish teens in their ambitious work to repair the world .”
Repairing the world is a central Jewish value and the spirit of tikkun olam . Previous awardees have taken on projects that address concerns as diverse as homelessness , rare diseases , food insecurity , social and economic inequalities , and education gaps . They have also been recognized by some of the world ’ s foremost institutions and leaders , including the United Nations Foundation , the White House , the Clinton Global Initiative , Forbes 30 Under 30 , the Jefferson Awards , CNN Heroes , and the Nickelodeon HALO Awards .
The Helen Diller Family Foundation is a supporting foundation of the Jewish Community Federation of San Francisco , the Peninsula , Marin and Sonoma Counties .

structure of the permit would make it more difficult to staff their programs and centers , and undermine their ability to comply with external regulations such as Head Start requirements for mandated staff ratios and responsibilities that are based on the current permit structure .
The panel made a number of recommendations that included :
• Require coursework for all permit candidates relating to infants and toddlers .
• Develop performance expectations for all levels of the permit .
• Develop program guidelines to assist preparation programs to prepare candidates to meet the applicable performance expectations .
Recommendations to increase unit requirements and professional development responsibilities for earning and renewing a permit generated concern about increasing the time and costs it would take for individuals to prepare and enter the early childhood workforce , which could have a negative impact on supply and / or access to state funded child care and development programs in the current context .
While the professional intent of California ’ s effort is to evaluate the recommendations within the national report , we should all be mindful that this movement is based upon research of existing programs in states where teachers of early learners are compensated on a similar level as regular K-12 teachers .

Applying standards and practices from other states with different funding practices to California ’ s system is out of synch . These states have legislative support and funding to not only increase their standards and practices , but they also have support to modify and improve the compensation levels of these teachers .
To be consistent , California must first gain the support of the Legislature to address the funding expectations of those child permit holders who would be compelled to take additional course work . Under existing compensation models , any requirement to have Child Development Permit holders take coursework would place significant burdens on permit holders who receive minimal compensation for their work with pre-schoolers .
Stakeholders stressed the need for the CTC to move away from a unit structure and toward a competency model . In response , the commission decided to postpone action until staff can bring back additional information on the impact of the panel recommendations .

These report cards are also intended to inform the public of the status of teacher preparation programs . Title 2 reporting data is intended to encourage transparency and accountability and to encourage a national conversation on teacher quality .
In California , approximately two-thirds , or 62 percent , of the teacher candidates were enrolled in a private / independent college or university and slightly more than one-third , or 34 percent , were enrolled at a California State University campus . This is a dramatic shift from a time when the CSU campuses provided the overwhelming majority of teachers to public education .
Why the shift from the public CSU system to private colleges and universities , especially considering the much higher cost of attending private colleges and universities ? The answer is access .
CSU ’ s have cut back on their program

This has resulted in candidates having to pay for one or more semesters or quarters beyond the normal time to complete all of their baccalaureate and / or credential courses . Candidates , as the data supports , are more willing to pay a higher tuition and enter the job market sooner , rather than pay for additional enrollment registration and delay entering the workplace .
Subject area preparation data indicates similar completion rates between the traditional route and the alternative routes in areas such as social science , liberal arts , and math and science .
Low incidence subjects such as agriculture , art , business , music and PE accounted for 9 percent completion , and English and world languages together accounted for another 13 percent .
