Institutes help equity projects take root

Public education gaps in achievement , opportunity and learning persist , even though the state ’ s Local Control Funding Formula and Local Control and Accountability Plans demand they be closed .
To that end , ACSA offers Equity Institutes that aim to build cultural proficiency as a foundation for closing gaps and learning to lead with equity . The program for district teams and individual leaders from all educational levels takes place over multiple sessions , empowering participants

A passion for leadership

ACSA ’ s Marcus Foster Memorial Award for Administrator Excellence is bestowed on a school leader who exhibits many of the same qualities that made Marcus Foster a great leader . The award exemplifies those who are skilled managers of change ; who involve all community and professional sectors ; who are willing to take risks to improve education for students ; who are creative ; who speak out on issues that impact students and who respect the rights of all people . to be proactive and responsive to the diverse needs of the communities they serve .
While the work in the institute provides a deeper focus on race and ethnicity through a culturally proficient lens , the foundational skills that are explored and developed can be applied to effectively serve all marginalized groups , including LGBTQ , gender , disabilities , religion and language .
“ Educational leaders must have a deep belief system and understanding of diversity that empowers them to be proactive and
responsive to the needs of students who are the focus of their LCAPs ,” said ACSA Diversity and Equal Access Executive Nicole Anderson . “ ACSA ’ s Equity Institutes are designed to give our leaders in-depth professional development that addresses the core of their belief systems , awareness of the inequitable conditions in schools , and the skills to implement actions that disrupt these patterns of inequities .”
