Population
During 2013, the population of the United States increased
by more than 2.25 million and that of Alabama increased by
16,194; however, the population of Montgomery metro fell by
2,311. The components that led to the decline are shown in
Table-4.

Montgomery metro has seen a decline in population for two
successive years. During 2013, while Montgomery, Autauga
and Lowndes counties showed a decline in population,
Elmore County had an increase in population. The decline in
population should be an issue of great concern.

In addition to Montgomery, four other MSAs in Alabama
showed a decline in population. In contrast, Daphne-FairhopeFoley (+2.55%), Auburn-Opelika (+2.11%), Huntsville (+1.3%)
and Tuscaloosa (+0.94%) had a population growth during 2013.

135th in the nation for the size
of its current-dollar GDP. It was
ranked 248th for its Real GDP
growth during 2012.
