June 2014 College of Business Administration 2013 Economic Overview and Outlook for the Montgomery Metropolitan Area Montgomery Metropolitan Area Overview Metropolitan Statistical Areas in Alabama A Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) is a geographical region with a relatively high population density at its core and close economic ties throughout the area. MSAs are defined by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and used by the Census Bureau and other federal government agencies for statistical purposes. There are a total of 388 MSAs in the country, of which 12 MSAs are in the state of Alabama. Table-1 lists the 12 MSAs ranked based on population while Table-2 lists the same MSAs ranked based on their Current-Dollar GDP. Table-3 lists the MSAs, the Real GDP and the growth of Real GDP and ranks them based on the GDP growth rate during 2012. The Montgomery metropolitan area includes four counties: Autauga, Elmore, Lowndes and Montgomery. The MSA occupies an area of 131.4 square miles and includes the cities of Montgomery (population-205,293), Prattville (population-34,873), Millbrook (population-14,952), Wetumpka (population-7,103) and the town of Pike Road (population-6,555). As of July 2013, the MSA had a population of 373,510, ranking it 140th among United States metropolitan areas. The metro area had a currentdollar GDP of $15.425 billion during 2012, ranking it 135th among United States metropolitan areas. The growth rate of Real GDP was -0.6%, ranking Montgomery metro at 332 among 388 metro areas in the U.S. in terms of Real GDP growth rate. Montgomery metropolitan area’s population of 373,510, ranks it 140th among United States metropolitan areas.
