SUMMARY

Beaches and Dunes
Analysis of indicators suggest the vegetation and geomorphology of the beaches and dunes on Kiawah Island are in stable , recovering conditions . Sea turtle nesting metrics also show a long-term upward trend . Concern still exists with shorebird populations , in which some species are in historical decline due to human disturbances throughout their migration pathways . Limiting human disturbances within the beach and dune system is essential for protecting plant and wildlife habitat . Walking on established paths and elevated boardwalks prevents impacts to fragile dune vegetation . Avoiding shorebirds while walking on the beach is essential to protecting the survival of shorebirds . Any disturbance to migratory shorebirds can significantly threaten their ability to make their journey between breeding and non-breeding areas . Likewise , avoiding flagged sea turtle nesting sites and removing any litter on the beach will help to sustain sea turtle populations in the Northern Atlantic . We should continue these practices and enhance them over time to continue improving the ecological integrity of the beach and dune system .
