Prior to the assembly to commemorate the brave
actions taken to change the course of a nation
50 years ago, President Obama signed H.R. 431,
awarding the Congressional Gold Medal to the
Foot Soldiers who participated in Bloody Sunday,
Turnaround Tuesday, or the final Voting Rights
March from Selma to Montgomery in March of
1965, which served as a catalyst for the passage
of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 later that year.
