42 Coaches Matter Issue 28 WICKET TAKING ATHLETES National Lead Fielding Coach Carl Hopkinson met with ECB Coach Development to share his plans for fielding and fielding coaching with ECB Coaches Association members in this issue. WHAT IMPACT DO YOU WANT YOUR ROLE TO HAVE? My vision is that we develop wicket taking athletes that create pressure as a unit. We need to create a culture that exhibits a passion for fielding and excites the next generation of cricketers. ARE THERE ANY PRINCIPLES THAT YOU BELIEVE ARE KEY TO FIELDING COACHING? 1. Basics at pace – the best fielders do the simple things quickly 2. Train the shock element – practising that little moment of tension when a chance comes, but staying calm and executing your skill 3. Read the game – anticipation of the shot that is about to be played and getting into position TRAINING SHOCK 10-15m AIM • Hit the stumps and take the high catch ORGANISATION • Fielder throws three balls at stumps • When fielder touches third ball, coach hits high catch • Player takes high catch PROGRESSION • Coach hits high catch when fielder touches the second ball • Fielder must throw second and third ball before attempting catch
