Herman Melville
Was an American writer, novelist, poet, and essayist of the American Renaissance
period. Among his best-known novels are Taipi (1846), based on his experiences in
Polynesia and his masterpiece, the novel Moby Dick (1851) 1 a classic of world
literature.
Between 1853 and 1855, he published in the Putnam Magazine a series of stories, 2
gathered most of them in The Piazza Tales, among which are two of the most important
stories of Melville: the story Bartleby, the scribe and the short novel Benito Cereno.
