The dog days of summer are here ! The heat , humidity , and consistent rain fall has kicked in the heavy growth rate of the bermudagrass . We have been lucky to get consistent rainfall that is not overwhelming the golf course and causing cart path only conditions for more than a day or two at a time . It has been a good balance to allow us to keep on our mowing schedule without things getting too out of hand .
August is the month where we just do our best to try and stay ahead of our mowing schedule . Our new pull behind mower is a fantastic upgrade for us and is doing a great job on the course . It is not easy this time of year and keeping everything running properly is more than a full-time job . Our mechanic , Josh , has done a good job of keeping our heads above water and continues to produce a good quality of cut on all the equipment .
The summer months also bring mole crickets to the bermudagrass . We applied Chipco Choice that was sliced into fairways and tees in late May to help control the new hatchlings . We will have to apply insecticide as needed on greens to keep the adults in check . We unfortunately can ’ t slice in the Chipco on greens because the machine would destroy them . It is an ongoing process throughout the summer to control them on greens but we will be persistent with our insecticide applications to keep them at a manageable level . This is what also causes the sandhill cranes to damage some of the greens in search of a meal . We will stay on top of our insecticide applications to limit the damage and keep a smooth putting surface .
I hope everyone is safe and drinking plenty of water this time of year . No matter if it ’ s at work or at home working in your lawn , drink plenty of fluids ! The humidity right now is very imposing and will cause heat related illness in a matter of no time . This is nothing to play around with and can cost you your life . Avoid the hours of 2-6 in the afternoons and stay hydrated .
