FROM THE YOGA STUDIO
With 2025 upon us , we might be questioning the value of making those New Year resolutions once again . Why bother if year after year we abandon them in just a few weeks only to return to our old behavior . Why put ourselves through all that hassle ?
First let ’ s consider our approach to making a list of resolutions . In the month of December we might have made Christmas lists that included everything that we love . These lists are full of what we dream of experiencing or having . Now in January , we typically take a very different view . We start with everything that we don ’ t like about ourself , our body , our job , and even our relationships and decide that we need to make radical improvements .
Can you see where we might be going astray ? What if we wrote out New Year resolutions as a way to inspire us ? Rather than setting goals that focus on all the things that we hate about ourselves our or lives , we could tune into what we really value . For instance , I find that we are much more successful at achieving fitness if we decide to do something that we enjoy several times a week , like yoga , golf or walking , and carve time out of our busy schedule to do just that . Another example is rather than saying I won ’ t eat this , we could think of our favorite healthy foods and build a new menu based on those . If we want less stress , we might choose to meditate 15 minutes in the morning as opposed to saying we ’ ll watch less TV .
In yoga , it is said that success comes with an enthusiastic dedicated practice over time .
We see here that this is a process approach to achievement and it depends on our attitude . I remember wanting to start running when I was in high school . I asked my friend who was captain of the track team how fast my pace should be . He suggested instead that I choose a time and run my best . If it was
