S.A.D. Again…

Eagle Lak?
s this newsletter goes to press, the 2013 Herbicide Treatment process, funded by the Special Assessment District, is underway. After doing extensive research to locate highimpact herbicides to attack our predominant Hybrid Eurasian Water Milfoil (HEWM), we can report: we found some! However, none were in the price range for the annual funding provided by our S.A.D. The quotes we received exceeded the annual funding by over $37,000. That is a large gap! Because we experienced fine results in 2012 by using a “witch’s brew” of endothall, diquat bromide, and chelated copper, we decided to renew the same permit we acquired in 2012. As you recall, in 2012, we did not treat every bed of HEWM because of the cost, so we concentrated on Quadrants 1 through 4 and the channels. Large areas of the eastern half of Eagle Lake, where quadrants 1 thru 4 are located, have significantly reduced HEWM. The areas are now experiencing growth of NAIAD (bushy pondweed) and CHARA (muskgrass). This is further confirmed by the “floating weeds” in the lake this year in July and August. Visual observations show that HEWM is no longer the predominant floating “mess” we sometimes have to rake up along the shore line. So, in 2013, we are treating quadrants 7 and 8, which are on the west and north side of the lake (where the water is about eight feet deep), as well as the channels.
We now have three people to assist handling our permits and bids, and are targeting having our plan ready by December each year and the permit applied for by January 30, so we can treat earlier. The CLMP testing program continues this year with Lori Mrozek taking the lead on the weekly Secchi Disk tests. Our spring phosphorus, sampled in April, has been analyzed by the MSU lab at 17 mg/l, which is the highest on record for Eagle. Our neighboring lakes (Painter and Christian) were also high on phosphorus at 23 and 15, respectively. We will have monitor this, as something might be having an impact on our watershed. ?
