Start Small , Start Now !
If we were tenting it , we ’ d be home . But actually , probably a tent would have changed into Airbnb .
MARC : We would have bought an RV on the trip . I mean , one of the things that ’ s just shocking , I think to both of us is that we didn ’ t even know RV living existed . We ’ ve done so many things in boating and travel and whatnot , but we just weren ’ t plugged into RVs . I saw RVs on the road , but I didn ’ t know they were going to an RV park . I didn ’ t know they were seeing these amazing places at a fraction of the cost of what it would be to fly there .
TRISH : So we found ourselves in this RV . We decided to take one step at a time , again , because this is now one of our founding principles : What is the next step we can take ? We figured out how to get our kids on online . Then we said , we ’ re going to do this for six months which became the time frame leading to all these different experiences . We didn ’ t think the business would be able to handle being in Europe for a year because we had family stuff we wanted to be around for .
have to meet face to face . Then someone came over to our house and encouraged us to visit them in Michigan for a month . We were thinking that sounds like fun ! It started to snowball .
Well now we had a place that we knew we could be on kind of the other side of the country . We knew we were leaving on May 27 th and we knew that we could be with them in July . We didn ’ t even know we were going to RV and that ’ s why their house was so important because we were tent camping . We thought , okay , that was a place to be ! So many of our ideas are ridiculous , but when they come to pass , it ’ s , Oh wow . I ’ m so glad we did that .
MARC : Since we had made some decisions , it really got clear . One point I knew I couldn ’ t be taking on clients I needed to see face to face . That was definite . So that shifted immediately in terms of the type of work I was going to do . We knew that most of our things were going to go into storage . So it meant stop buying things that we didn ’ t want to store . It meant we started the process of decluttering the house . All of a sudden , we had this new clarity where we started opening up drawers and looking inside drawers . We started going through our kitchen and looking at pans for specialty parties we had thrown in the past that we ’ ve never really used .
TRISH : I have to say in the beginning it was super funny . I mean , we had truckloads leaving the house .
MARC : It was amazing . All the trips to the donation center were insane .
Then we decided on the road trip . We picked a date , May 27 th . I remember specifically because it got pushed to May 28 th based upon a party that Tori had . So initially the date was May 27 th . When did we come up with that date ?
We had picked that day about four months before and began switching things for the business because we wanted to be location independent and where we didn ’ t
TRISH : So just literally multiple trips going out and it was , this is great . This is so great . Then it came down to the stuff that I cared about . Then it was , I ’ m not giving this away . I started getting a little possessive over some of it .
MARC : Let ’ s take the books as a great example . We had maybe 200 books . The first round we gave a hundred books to the library .
