Strategies for Increasing Fluency

Developing uency, or automaticity, is important at all layers of text: sound-symbol, word, phrase and passage. However, we often don ' t recognize a lack of uency until students read connected text while being timed. This workshop will equip educators with tools to increase uency at all stages of reading instruction.
WORKSHOP OUTCOMES( HIGHLIGHTS):
Ÿ Identify printed words that are the exception to regular patterns and spelling principles.
Ÿ Determine which students need a uency-oriented approach to instruction using screening, diagnostic, and progressmonitoring assessments.
Ÿ Match students with appropriate texts.
Ÿ Design lesson plans that incorporate uency-building activities into instruction at sub-word and word levels.
Ÿ Design lesson plans with a variety of techniques to build reading uency.
Ÿ Identify student interests and needs to motivate independent reading.
Ÿ Make appropriate recommendations for use of assistive technology.
