2016 has been a very productive and successful year for DVJS
obtaining over 500 job placements with supportive employers
from unskilled positions to apprenticeships and professional
appointments. It is great to see so many of you now working proving
your worth in a broad range of employment positions that vary in
their skill sets and industries that includes but not limited to; Retail &
Customer Service, Data entry/ IT, Call Centre Operators, Hair Dressing,
Teaching, Security, Kitchen Hands, Console Operators, Landscaping,
Animal Care, Aged Care and General Factory Hands. 500 lives were
significantly changed this year by having a regular job and we hope we
can place even more of you in 2017!
There were many companies that employed multiple DVJS job seekers this
year - EDMI Gas, Action Pack, Rapid Pack, Stamford Hotel, Anaconda, Victorian
Clothing Exporters, Berwick Mazda, New World Honda, Biscay Greetings are just
a few of those that did...many job seekers are now independent of DVJS forging
sustainable careers with their employer. DVJS has been operating for over 23 years
& having satisfied employers recruiting multiple people demonstrates we are doing
something right!
Some job seekers that obtained a job were unable to keep it...reasons varied from
job suitability to health. Although these jobs did not become long term, DVJS keeps
striving to find you the ‘right’ job and learns from previous jobs so that hopefully the
issue does not recur again. We cannot guarantee a ‘job for life’...we can only put
you forward and hope that with your skills & attitude, our support and the employer’s
preparedness to make it work that it will work!
More and more employers are taking on new workers as casuals as they need
a flexible work force and want to see how new workers settle before offering
permanent employment. Some job seekers won’t consider working casually initially
but a job is a job and you have to be flexible and meet the employer’s needs. If you
don’t, someone else will & you miss out.
From my own experience, I started as a casual day care aide working with the
Spastic Society whilst attending Uni. This was not my dream job or a job that I was
even considering when at high school but was presented to me by a neighbour.
Who would have known that this casual position would set a new employment path
for me? I have now been in disability for over 30 years...being flexible and open to
take a casual job opened me to new experiences and opportunities.
Should your DVJS consultant present you with a job that you may not have thought
about before, don’t feel like they are failing you or not listening but take the view
they are only presenting you with other opportunities to which you can grow.
DVJS would like to thank all of you for your support throughout 2016 by allowing
DVJS to be the agency assisting you find and hold employment and we look forward
to working with you during 2017.
Please note that DVJS will be closed from Friday 23rd December and will re-open
on Tuesday 3rd January.
Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and successful 2017.
