News from the Carnavals Club ‘The Sandgropers’ Inc:
The Sandgropers are still on track with their plans for a ‘Country & Western’ afternoon as a fundraiser for Dutch Aged Care WA (DACWA). The function will be held on Sunday the 21st October 2012 at the Dutch Club Neerlandia, doors opening at 1100 am. As usual the Neerlandia Bar and Kitchen will be open & in this case early so patrons can come for a lunch. Prizes will be given to best Male, Female and Couple in C&W gear. Of course there will be a big raffle which is the CC The Sandgropers style. We look forward to this being a big event and of course to being able to present DACWA with a nice cheque at the end of it. For bookings please contact the Secretary Henny on 04223165945 or email: [email protected]. the Sandgropers as a very professional group and naturally our Aat was a big part of this. The Sandgropers often performed skits in those earlier days, and one such skit was ‘The Ringalingers from Rottenburg’. Th is showed 4 of our members as the performers – 2 male 2 female all dressed in Austrian costumes. The females played the ‘cow bells’ and the males played ‘piano accordions’. Aat was the leading accordion player and organized the music and the timing; and of course the hilarious rehearsals. For this occasion the men especially went out to purchase ‘Accordions’ at a cost of $400 a piece! A cost that was overlooked, because it was for ‘the fun of it’. He was also cast in a skit as a mouth organ player – the skit was taking off the Dutch comedian ‘Doris’ and naturally the mouth organ was a ‘laundry brush’. Aat enjoyed these moments of fun and was never backwards in coming forwards when it came to participating - including the time he was a ‘Prima Ballerina’ in yet another Carnaval skit. In the last few years Aat showed a real keen interest in photography; bought himself an excellent camera; went to photography classes and started taking some very good and excellent photos many of which I was lucky enough to receive copies of. 6th July 2012. Aat had been the President of Dutch Radio in WA for a long, long time up until just 6 months ago. He had been unwell off and on for a few years but fought back to a point when it was thought he had beaten his ailment however a few months back it returned to plague him once again but the battle was one too difficult to bear. He was laid to rest on the 17 th July – many of his friends and family came to his wake that was held at the Dutch Club Neerlandia. He will be greatly missed by all of the members of Dutch Radio in WA – by the Panel Operators and by the Announcers most of whom had known him for quite some time.
