Drum: MAIL 13 Face Of Africa Would someone kindly tell Hilda Gabriel that the word ‘Golliwog’ is a highly offensive and derogatory term...Hilda Gabriel’s bio reads that she is well travelled and a connoisseur of fashion, beauty and style. The use of this word definitely brings into question her exposure to different cultures and, if she can liken a black person to a golliwog, then I question her ability to judge black beauty on the continent of Africa. I was so offended to have found this word in use that I immediately shut down the website. Nokia, the sponsors of Face of Africa, is an international brand crossing divides on all continents and their association with someone like Hilda Gabriel would definitely make me rethink the brand. Ola, world wide web Democratic Rights I came across Drum magazine in my local newsagent, I had never seen your magazine before and was attracted to it by it’s size and the wonderful image of Beyoncé on the cover. Having flicked through, I couldn’t believe it! Here, at last, was a magazine that dealt with issues from my perspective.
