Letter of the Month Food for Thought Came across your magazine the other day and was blowing hot and cold the minute I saw the word ‘half caste’ on your cover. What were these people thinking, I was thinking, don’t they know that word went out with the Golliwog and Sambo jokes? I’ve got two teenage mixed-race sons and my husband and I get really mad if we hear people calling them half-caste. It just makes our blood boil. Thankfully, I didn’t let that stop me buying your magazine. I took it home and read the ‘offending’ article first. Then after I’d read everything from cover to cover in one sitting, I had to say, spot on! We just love your magazine and what you’re doing. I showed it to our sons and they took it in turn to read it too. That’s a minor miracle in our house because those boys never read or like to share anything. Thank you for producing a quality mag for everyone in our family. Great food for thought and stunning looking, it’s about time. Margaret, Bristol, UK “Magazines like Drum are like mini bibles, they teach people to think.” For Better or Worse The Americanisation of British culture is an issue, the Americanisation of black British culture is even more of an issue! It’s almost seen as the Holy land and that they’ve got it cracked over there, and unless you’ve been there you can’t understand that so many things are much worse.
