LOOKING BACK ON KING OF THE HAMMERS CHAMPIONS Known by many as one of the most challenging races on the planet to complete, King of the Hammers is a true test of man and machine. These famous few hold the honored crowns. 2007 JR REYNOLDS 2009 JASON SCHERER 2011 SHANNON CAMPBELL Twelve racers, known collectively as the OG13, raced for a “beer bet,” with Reynolds winning in his Bronco buggy. To win the race, Scherer worked to modify his Campbell Enterprises rockcrawling chassis for desert speeds. Becoming the first to win the race twice, and the first to win in an IFS car, Campbell amazed us all. 2008 SHANNON CAMPBELL 2010 LOREN HEALY 2012 ERIK MILLER The first “real” race, it was a 48-car field and Campbell won it, coming from the back (by starting order) in a modified moon buggy. Unknown in Ultra4, Healy showed up and nabbed a Last Chance Qualifier spot—going on to beat out Brad Lovell for victory by a narrow 29 seconds. Young, from the East Coast and in a solid-axle buggy, Miller showed up and proved the race was still anybody’s game. 6 DRIVINGLINE.COM
