Learning to plan further ahead is strongly linked to the ability of the driver to develop strategies to deal with hazards as they develop. The aim of this scenario is to assist the driver in developing this skill through achieving the following outcomes;

The development of forward planning skills.

The ability to prioritise hazards as they develop.

Scenario

Phase 1 (In car) Duration full lesson plus ongoing development.

At the side of the road the instructor should ask the learner to identify a hazard and then place the hazard on the workbook laminate in either the far, middle or near ground. The instructor should then ask the learner to look for hazards further ahead and place these on the laminate sheet. The instructor should then encourage the learner to identify the need to detect developing hazards early to allow them to plan an appropriate response.

The learner should be encouraged to identify where they are looking in their normal driving by asking them questions related to the near, middle and far and rear diagrams and if this is appropriate place for the conditions.

Phase 2 (Self-learning)

The learner should be asked to practice this technique when travelling as a passenger either by talking to themselves, or out loud, identifying what event would cause them to make a plan or where they are looking.

Phase 3 (In car) Duration 3-5 min max

Discuss their thoughts/experiences on scanning and planning, ask what they feel are the main benefits to scanning and planning and how they think they could improve. Encourage the learner to practice talk through during their driving lessons, raise their observations by asking where they are looking and what they are planning for. This could include basic talk through when appropriate; for example when approaching a junction or on quieter roads.
