My Day
Day to day I complete routine maintenance on a variety of vehicles , including an array of artic trailers , to more specialist vehicles such as the Oshkosh bulk fuel carrying vehicle and MHE equipment like the rough terrain container handler and forklifts .
As a deployable Squadron my Chain of Command are very keen on fitness standards , this affords me the opportunity to complete circuit sessions at the Station gym every day .
When on task , I undertake high responsibility leading large convoys of vehicles all over the UK and Europe .
My Experiences
Prior to 2MT Sqn I was stationed at RAF Lossiemouth , providing airfield support to the RAF ’ s quick reaction alert Typhoon aircraft and Tornado squadrons . Being stationed at a busy flying unit enabled my role to be varied , including VIP driving and the management of an MT fleet consisting upwards of 300 vehicles .
Whilst at 2MT Sqn I have led convoys to Greece , in support of the Red Arrows and to Estonia for NATO operations . The opportunity to travel is the focal reason I enjoy being an MT Driver .
Supporting wider Defence commitments , I have deployed to Oman , Cyprus , and the Falklands operating aircraft refuellers , high lift catering trucks , water and sanitation vehicles . The variation of vehicles I operate as a driver enables my job to stay fresh and interesting .
My Life
Since joining the RAF , I have undertaken a part-time BA Honours Business Management ( Accounting ) degree with The Open University . My role involves being stationed away from Unit most of the time , therefore distance learning provided by the OU is essential for me .
The RAF support my studies through my entitlement to learning credits , this financial support enables me to develop myself and in turn give back to the RAF .
