My Role
I work at No 2 Mechanical Transport Squadron ( 2MT Sqn ) at RAF Wittering . We form part of a high readiness Air Combat Service Support Unit . 2MT Sqn provide essential movement of freight by road in support of Air Operations and wider Defence Tasks throughout the UK and Europe .
We provide the sole heavy lift transport capability for all of Defence , transporting an array of freight from Typhoon engines , fire fighting vehicles , to high consequence dangerous goods such as aircraft ordinance .
The RAF provided the training required to gain my CAT C , C + E , D , driving qualifications enabling me to drive articulated lorries and coaches . On top of this , I have received an ADR licence through the RAF , enabling me to transport dangerous goods .
Promotion prospects are good within my role and I have been given the opportunity to be Acting Corporal for over 4 months , improving my chances to gain promotion to Substantive Corporal in the near future .
Liam Shenton – Logistics ( Driver )
Logistics Drivers provide the essential logistics required to support Air Power around the world . Logistics Drivers enable aircraft to operate through essential airfield support , such as the provision of aviation fuel , runway sweeping , and the operation of snow and ice clearance vehicles .
Coupled with the proficient movement of personnel and freight , Logistics Drivers ’ play an integral role in supporting all aspects of Defence .
