Drifting through Cityscapes Drifting through Cityscapes MTL final copy | Page 84
The process of our working begun it the comparison
of or photos of ‘68, all different but it one element in
common the supra mentioned partisan/contestant
environment of the pictures. Was a begging of the
journey we started by exploring by foot part of the
city. Drift until the idea came to us. That drift made us
question firstly the idea of memory and the right to/of
a memory, how the renovation of a city with history
such as Budapest creates holes of modernity (glass
and steel buildings) that don't have connection to
the surrounding area and to the general population.
That would be our first idea that later would be put to
the wall and it some brainstorming other perspec-
tives came to be. The final idea was the loudness of
the city, the symbolic loudness, the ancient cries of
the people that fought and died for the great caus-
es of History: Freedom, the Nation, the means of pro-
duction. All these rallying points that banish in the
mist of time, of the ever growing, ever changing city.
Nowadays which are our rallying points? A man with-
out a cause is a man without a path, a toddler that
follows the supra-structure that we don’t see. With
this idea we establish that the pacifier would be a
good symbol to use, by appropriating the symbolic
meaning of such a small but powerful object we
could achieve a work with an interesting aestheti-
cal/symbolic element. The pacifier and the walk,
those two simple things were the material that we
decided to use to our group work, the conceptual
process is simple (beauty is the simple things), to walk
generally as a group with pacifiers it creates a sense
of strangeness, ridicule and a small attention, one
that doesn’t catch the eye of most people. A lone
man walking in the street it a pacifier is a ‘loony’, a
group with pacifiers are also a bunch of ‘loonies’ but
the normal-day walker question it more and a great
impact is possible. The question of the everyday
spectator will be simple, was a fragment in the ev-
eryday life that small act doesn’t allow a greater un-
derstanding of our goal, how the contemporary
man is a toddler in the current state of affairs.
