Our path involved Blaha Lujza Tér , Kőbányai út , Népszínház utca , Teleki László Tér , Lujza utca , Kálvária Tér and Baross Utca .
Generally , we felt like strangers exploring an area we did not belong in .
Watching and examining the district from an outsider point of view , we realised that we were not part of the scene , rather we were being watched by the locals . With this in mind , we became almost a tourist attraction for the locals . This was not a negative experience , yet there was a level of isolation in this act even though we had begun to understand another layer of the city .
We simultaneously tried to create an Instagram that mapped our sensory experience as we explored the city . We experimented with ways of transforming our multi-sensory experiences into moving or still images so that people who followed our Instagram would also experience what we felt .
The physical representation of this walk was a sensory diary that contained both out individual impressions and our sensory maps of the area .
These are the Transcripts of Our Experiences
Change and smell . How does the scent of the city change ? What is the impact of the smell ?
It evokes memories , it creates positive / negative associations . The smell of the city effects how I feel . I create a sensory map , I leave an imprint , mark a place with my scent .
8th district : we walk .
I don ’ t feel welcome here . The smell of McDonalds fades away as we walk from the tourists .
I don ’ t feel welcome . I am being watched . They know I ’ m not from here .
The streets are quiet and cold . This lady smells like lemons . I don ’ t understand . I can ’ t read the writing . The graffiti , the signs , the shops . I8ts exciting and isolating . The streets are crumbling and forgotten . It ’ s hard to understand as an outsider .
Sewers and kebabs . Isabelle
