Sound itself is universal — like any other sensory stimuli . However , language constrains our ability to verbally describe or reproduce these stimuli : for example , through the existing verbs of a sound ’ s producer , or through onomatopoeic words . The way we perceive and characterize sound , therefore , is different within the boundaries of each language . The project started as an investigation of this phenomenon . Within the context of Budapest , the four-day workshop task , and given our group was comprised of five people speaking three different languages ( Hungarian , English , Italian ), we decided to use the linguistic diversity as a creative tool with which to absorb the city in an unusual way . So , through the analysis and interpretation of sound , semiotics and lexical semantics , and with writers such as Roland Barthes in mind , we visited various sites in the city and compiled videos of different sound producers as a starting point .
