julien macdonald does jewellery

Julien Macdonald is one of the biggest fashion designers to emerge from Britain and his designs can be recognized at any red carpet event. Known for his love of glamour – talking sparkles, sequins and glitter – Macdonald is one of those designers who have a very identifiable style and has been keen to stick to it since his career started in 2000. Macdonald’s career began when he was given the position of chief designer at the Haute Couture house of Givenchy in Paris and he had already embarked on some freelance work with Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel.

In 2001, Macdonald was named the ‘British Fashion Designer of the year’ but he hasn’t always been hailed for his work. In February of 2007, Macdonald was slammed for using animal fur in his autumn collection and prior to this, had been flour bombed for his furry antics.

With his excellence in mastering a red carpet dress, it comes as no surprise that the designer has broadened his designs skills from clothes, to jewellery. Macdonald recently revealed that he has designed a jewellery line for the home shopping channel QVC and like you’d assume, we’re not talking casual-look here and it took six months to design and develop the initial concepts.

When talking about his inspirations for the collection, Macdonald revealed ‘Yes. I call this my animal safari collection. I always get inspired by the places I've been to and I've been lucky enough to go on safari and I've seen amazing lions and tigers and elephants.’ He also explained how his designs will be similar to the jewellery seen in his catwalk shows, adding ‘it has an affinity with my show. Everything that I'm about is the big crystals and they're quite unique - they're coated in rose gold the whole way around. I like to do things which are a talking point’.

The designer was also quick to reveal that the collection is not a one-off, with plans already in process for the second collection next year. The 27-year-old told Glamour magazine that ‘Next year we'll have a different collection. The first collection is always a tempting collection with lots of different stories and ideas, just to see what the viewer likes.’ If one things for sure, it’s that our day-wear is about to get a seriously glitzy revival.
