DREAM BIG #2 August 2014 | Page 9

5. Discuss the Max Morath Chart from

previously mentioned site. A Survey

of Thomas Edison’s Inventions

worksheet is also helpful to remind

students of some of Edison’s

important inventions.

6. Artistically the Industrial Revolution

was an important social and cultural

event that brought about the creation of

collage by Picasso and Braque. It was

not seen as an art form at first but has

been recognized since then. Similar to

compute generated art which was not

widely accepted when it first was

created.

Directions

Step 1: Students will work in groups to illustrate how Edison’s inventions have influenced the technology that we have today. They may use a quote from Edison as part of composition, which may be provided or they can find at Brainyquotes.com. They must use collage but also can use other media such as markers, colored pencils, crayons, and pastels. Groups should brain storm ideas and draw thumbnail sketches before picking up 2’x2’ poster board.

Step 2: After the thumbnail sketch has been approved give groups paper so that they may start creating their compositions. Some students may look

up pictures of inventions online to incorporate or to use as sources to draw from.

Step 3: Groups will work together to create a 5-sentence paragraph to tell

about their poster. The paragraph should consist of a topic sentence, three supporting sentences, and a sentence that restates the topic in a different way. One student should e-mail this to me, making sure that the full names of all members of the group are included in the e-mail.

Evaluation

1. How does this assignment fit into your States common core curriculum standards? This assignment addresses social studies, science and art in a manner that shows how they are all interrelated.

2. Did you and your students enjoy working on this assignment? Students enjoyed being able to express what they learned in an artistic manner. Being creative and working with new media was fun and gave a hands on slant to the learning process.

3. Do you see any room for improvement? All in all I think the project went pretty well. I would have like to be able to team teach with the Social Studies teacher.
