CONSTRUCTION FOOTPRINT
CRITERIA FOR QUALIFICATION
One point of credit is available for projects that exceed the local ordinance requirements for protecting trees and plants.( For example, a typical basic requirement for minimum landscape protection is to fence trees at the drop line.) The project must achieve greater landscape protection by incorporating at least three of the following actions:
Prior to construction, develop and effectively implement a tree / plant preservation plan with nodisturbance zones clearly delineated on project drawings. Zones must go significantly beyond the tree drip lines to protect roots or limited landscape beds.
Prepare plants to protect them from construction activities through the use of best practices in pruning of limbs and roots, watering, fertilizing, etc.
Reduce soil compaction from construction equipment by laying beds of local mulch, chipped wood, etc. The beds must be a minimum of six inches thick. Leave at least 40 % of previously undeveloped lot area undisturbed. Create contract language for subcontractors to follow regarding reducing / minimizing site disturbance. Establish contractual penalties for the destruction of trees and disturbance of site areas noted for protection. Train workers to implement these practices.
Delineate laydown, recycling, and disposal areas. Use areas that will be paved as staging areas. Delineate parking for cars, trucks, and equipment on plans.
