Foundation B6.2. Plant Trunks, Bases, or Stems at Least 36 Inches from the Foundation (1 Point)
Maintaining a minimum distance of 36 inches from the exterior wall to the center of the plant stem and trunk keeps roots away from the foundation, reduces the chance of pests traveling from nearby branches onto the home, and allows the homeowner to more easily inspect for termite tunnels around the home’s foundation walls. This measure applies to all plants, shrubs, trees, and ground covers. VERIFICATION Measure B6.1 Field Verification: The Rater must take representative photos of termite shields at mudsills and piers. These efforts can be easily verified at any stage of construction. Measure B6.2 Field Verification: The Rater must conduct field verification and take representative photos. Field verification should include measurements from the building exterior wall to the plant trunk or stem. Photos should include a tape measure from the exterior wall to the center of the trunk or stem. INTENT To increase the durability of the construction by installing permanent, non-chemical measures to reduce damage caused by common pests and rot

PEST INSPECTION AND CORRECTION
An inspector will be able to locate wood-destroying insects and fungi and identify conditions that are conducive to the wood-destroying organisms. Typically, pest inspectors will provide recommendations for improvements and complete the work.
CRITERIA FOR QUALIFICATION Note: This measure applies to single family projects only. One point of credit is available for having a licensed professional complete a detailed pest inspection, including the garage and any outbuildings on the property. The report must have been completed within two years of the current rating; this is consistent with the two-year statute of limitations on all inspection reports under the Structural Pest Control Act. A significant number of the recommended pest control measures must be addressed to correct any acute problems. The report must categorize the findings as Section One or Section Two (which are the standard classifications in a Pest Inspection Report). Section One conditions contain items where there is visible evidence of active infestation and must be addressed. Section Two issues contain conditions that are identified as likely to lead to infestation but no active infestation is found, and correction is voluntary. Examples of corrections could include the following: ? ? 16 Replacing damaged wood Removing or altering sources of moisture, darkness, and pest food GreenPoint Rated Existing Home Rating Manual Version 6.0, September 2013 © Build It Green
