Aptly called the “ Million Dollar View ,” this remote stretch of U . S . Route 1 , in the northeastern-most section of DownEast Acadia offers travelers expansive views eastward across the Chiputneticook Chain of Lakes to New Brunswick , Canada and breathtaking views of Peekaboo Mountain and in the far distance , Mount Katahdin .

A few miles from busy U . S . Route 1 , this scenic byway is a quiet , winding journey through wooded hillsides and open vistas that allows access to trailheads and boat launches on several of the region ’ s inland lakes and mountains . Travelers can enjoy plentiful outdoor recreation , plus scenic views of the surrounding forestlands and the Atlantic Ocean off in the distance .
The two anchor towns , dating back to the 18th century , have populations of fewer than 2,000 each . Blueberries and Christmas trees are big in Franklin — once a town booming with granite industries . Cherryfield , which calls itself the Wild Blueberry Capital of the World , is the home of Wyman ’ s , which has always been the worlds largest producer of wild blueberries .
A former lumber town in the Baskahegan River Valley , Danforth marks the route ’ s southerly limit and provides most amenities . Weston , marking the northernmost limit , is the location of a historic portage used by Native cultures and early settlers to travel between Baskahegan Stream to East Grand Lake .
The drive reaches its highest point near the top of Peekaboo Mountain . From the Weston-Orient line travelers may choose to continue along U . S . Route 1 north to explore Aroostook County .

• Historic Weston Community Church , brought across the frozen East Grand Lake from Canada
• Danforth ’ s Union Hall , also known as Town Hall , is a historical landmark and hosts music and performances during the summer .
• Stop at any of three Scenic Turnouts located at miles 1.5 , 2.5 , and 5.5 .

• Donnell Pond Public Reserve Land ; 4,000 acres of forested land with crystal-clear lakes , secluded ponds , and mountains with panoramic views .
• Climb to the summit of Caribou Mountain then enjoy a cool , post-hike swim in Donnell Pond .
• Many stops along the way offer excellent bird and wildlife watching opportunities .
• Enjoy a stop on the Maine Wine Trail at Catherine Hill Winery for a wine tasting .
